Maldives is a nation of small islands located in central Indian Ocean. The archipelago consists of about 1,200 tiny coral islands of which about 200 are currently inhabited. These islands are found in 26 natural atolls.

Maldives covers an area of 90,000 square kilometers and is located about 600 kilometers off south west Sri Lanka, stretching along 73° East longitude from about 8° North to 1° South. The country has a total land area of about 298 km2 of which less than 10 percent is used for agriculture. Within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Maldives, a coastal fishery zone extending from the outer rim of the atolls to 75 mile offshore is reserved for the exclusive use of Maldivian fishers.

The Exclusive Economic Zone has an area of about 1.2 million km2 and broadens to some 125 miles beyond the outer edges of the coastal fishery zone, except at its northern and southern boundary line of the country.
